The Alkaline Diet - What's It All about?

The Alkaline diet used to be more 'fringe' however it is gaining in popularity as people are looking for a diet to energize them and improve their health (in addition to losing weight).

The diet is based on the principle that in order to maintain optimal health and the proper weight, our bodies must be kept in the proper PH balance.

The problem is that the average western diet, with the processed foods, sweets and fast foods is very acid-producing. And when acidic wastes accumulate, they can cause organs to malfunction and break down.

They also cause added weight and stubborn fat deposits that don't want to budge.

The Alkaline diet aims to reverse this problem by focusing on more alkaline-producing foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, spices, etc.

When you are more alkaline, you lose weight easier (and the weight tends to come off in the right places, if you know what I mean) and you feel more energetic. You feel healthier and some people even report looking younger too.

How The Diet Works:

While there are a number of different diet plans out there based on the Alkaline plan, you will mainly be eating mostly alkaline-forming foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds and alkaline grains.

You'll be staying away from or limiting acid-forming foods like meat, fish, eggs, sugar, coffee, alcohol, and grains that are acid-forming.

The diet claims that by fixing the pH in the body to a more alkaline level, you can lose weight and improve many elements of all around health.

Alkaline diets claim to help everything from reducing bone loss, to improving your skin complexion, to preventing acid reflux, and to improving gastrointestinal issues like irritable bowel syndrome.

How Does It Rate?

Is It Fast?

It's hard to say since it really depends on which alkaline diet you try. However we've heard of some people losing from 3 - 5 pounds a week. But it does still depend on how many calories you're taking in.

If you want to lose weight fast on this diet, we recommend getting a Free Alkaline food diet guide here.

Is It Easy To Follow?

Yes. Again, it depends on which Alkaline diet you follow, but in general, there are lots of alkaline foods you can eat on this diet.

And given that you'll probably feel much more energetic and vibrant on this diet, it can help you stick with it.

Is It Safe?

Again, it depends on the specific diet you choose. However overall, the diet gives you a lot of vitamins and nutrients in the fruits and veggies. The nuts can give you good fats and the lower glycemic carbs can help with blood sugar.

The only possible problems with this diet may be the lack of animal protein. Animal protein can help give you iron and B-12 which may be lacking in vegetables sources of protein.

Does It Permit 'Treats'?

Not really. Chocolate, wine, and most of the good stuff is acid-forming. You may be able to get away with a little bit, given that you stick to all alkaline-forming foods the rest of the time.

Is There Support?

No. Since this isn't necessarily a commercial diet (or a big-name celebrity trainer hasn't written a book about it yet), there's not much online support for it. You can find more information at this website including a list of alkaline foods and free recipes.

Final Grade: B-

The Alkaline diet can be a very healthy diet plan - and a great diet to follow for weight loss. You'll not only lose weight but probably gain a ton of energy, clear, glowing skin and tons of compliments.

You still have to remember to practice moderation and calorie control with this diet (too many nuts can be diet-sabotaging). Also, make sure you're getting enough iron, B12 and protein.

Unlike other diets that restrict you to a certain calorie intake, this diet places more emphasis on food selection without providing too many regulations in terms of 'how much'. It's imperative you come up with this information on your own so that you can get the weight loss you want.
