Special K Diet Revealed

The Special K Diet - Is It Just about Eating More Cereal Bars?

The Special K diet is a weight loss plan designed using Special K products. It is designed by Kelloggs mainly to promote their products - which doesn't make it a bad thing - commercial interests and weight loss can sometimes go together.

The plan mainly consists of eating 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. Two of your meals are replaced by Special K cereals, protein shakes or protein meal bars. The third meal is a 'sensible' dinner (you can get recipes at the Special K site). The snacks are of course, Special K bars, crackers, fruit crisps or protein water. You can also have fruits and veggies as snacks.

There are 4 different plans to choose from - the Classic plan, the Mix It Up plan for those who want more variety, the On-The-Go plan for the busy individual, and the Chocolate lovers plan.

How The Diet Works:

The Special K diet is basically a lower calorie plan that balances out your calorie intake througout the day. There's a balance between protein, carbs and fats.

The diet does promote Special K products, which is obviously understandable given that the plan is designed by the Kellogg's company.

Some people who don't like too many processed foods in their diet or who have intolerances like wheat or gluten problems may not like this plan.

Basically you choose your plan from the 4 types of plans, choose your start date and go. The site gives you a list of what to eat and when.

You are then responsible for buying the Special K products and making the meals up yourself. That's about it - there isn't much in terms of support or tracking tools.

How Does It Rate?

Is It Fast?

There's not a lot of information on the website about how fast you can expect to lose. Just looking at it however, we'd estimate you're looking at about 1 - 2 pounds per week, which isn't much.

Is It Easy To Follow?

It can be fairly easy to follow. You get the cereal, bars, protein shakes, etc. and go. You also have to make the meals at night according to the recipes - which does take some work.

On the positive side, the diets is pretty straightforward and you're told exactly what to eat. There are 4 different plans so you can choose the one that fits your preferences.

Is It Safe?

The Special K diet plan seems pretty safe for most people (although a bit high on the carbohydrates, which may be a problem for diabetics or those with blood sugar issues).

Still, it does include protein and fruits and veggies which can give you the nutrients you need.

Does It Permit 'Treats'?

That depends on what you'd define as 'treats'. While there's no allowances for cheat days or your own desserts, glass of wine, etc., there is the chocolate lovers plan which includes some chocolate cereal bars that do taste quite good.

Is There Support?

No. The website helps you choose a plan and gives you a menu with recipes but that's about it. You're on your own from there.

Final Grade: C

The Special K diet is a lower calorie diet promoted by the Kelloggs company that uses it's products like cereals and cereal bars.

You get a plan to follow at the website but you're responsible for buying the cereals, cereal bars and other ingredients for the recipes.

Weight loss is steady and gradual but not earth shattering. Still the plan is fairly easy to follow and if you really like the cereal bars, might be worth a try.
